WE WILL BE CLOSED ON EASTER SUNDAY.
PUT ON YOUR BEST HAT AND JOIN THE EASTER PARADE!
Is Easter just a celebration of the Resurrection of the Christ, or can we be more inclusive in our reverence for the Spring Equinox(the return of the Sun, or Son)? There are also many instances of other ‘resurrected saviors’ in other cultures. The Sumarian goddess, Innana or Ishtar, was hung from a stake and resurrected from the underworld. Horus, Mithras and Dionysus all had similar stories of life and re-birth. The symbols of Easter also have roots in the ancient pagan rites. Exchanging eggs is an ancient custom practiced by many cultures. Bunnies are associated with the festival of Eostre, a great beautiful northern goddess whose symbol was a rabbit or hare. Hot Cross Buns are very ancient too. Religious leaders in the Old Testament tried to stop the Israelites from baking sweet buns for an idol and the early church did not allow sacred cakes at Easter. In the end, facing defiant cake-baking pagan women, they just gave up and blessed the cake instead.
Honor your traditions, whatever they may be, and celebrate with family and friends during this ‘Return of the Sun, or Sun’ season. Welcome diversity and embrace the differences you see in others and make your little part of the world just a little bit brighter. Happy Easter, Eostre, Ishtar, and Happy Spring!
